The Four Major Patent Groups
An explanation of how patents are organized
Chemical patents aren't just about chemicals. Chemical patents cover biotechnology and organic chemistry; chemical and materials engineering inventions; and, plant patents - the discovery or invention of a new asexually reproduced plant. If you've ever eaten a pluot you've enjoyed the fruits of a plant patent. This is where you will find drugs and drug delivery methods; molecular biology; DNA and RNA; microbiology, immunology, and chemistry.

Electrical patents cover the inventions of the information age - computer architecture, software and information security; computer networks, multiplex communications, video distribution and security, communications, semiconductors, electrical and optical systems and components. This is the domain of the internet, the high definition television, mobile devices and the inventions that make them possible.

Mechanical inventions include planes, trains, and automobiles and bull dozers too. Patents in the mechanical disciplines cover machines and manufacturing, transportation, construction; and mechanical engineering, manufacturing and products. Here you'll find inventions in electronic commerce (the cash register was a mechanical device so it's logical that its successors are found here) business methods; and inventions related to agriculture.

Design patents cover how things look - their appearance. Monitoring design patents provides insight into how things looked, look or will look in the future. Design patents cover the look of everything from the design of the tread of your tires, the look of an edible product, the patterns on paper towels, the latest in strappy sandals, the grill of a pickup truck and the latest safety device handles.
